Planning Time (B8) and Collaboration Time (A4)

Course Description

Algebra 1 will begin where 8th graded ended: linear equations in one and two variable and linear functions. In Algebra 1 students will increase their procedural skill and fluency in solving linear equations and inequalities on one variable. Additionally, students will deepen their understanding of linear equations and inequalities in two variables. Also, the course will emphasize modeling with linear equation and inequalities, culminating with solving systems of both linear equations and inequalities. Next, the course shifts to developing a deeper understanding of functions. Students will focus on linear and exponential functions by exploring real-life situations that could be modeled by either a linear or an exponential function. Then students will move to studying quadratic equations and functions, including identifying key elements of graphs, transformations with functions, and identifying domain and range. Students will apply these newly developed understandings and skills with functions to simple radical and rational functions and then to piecewise-defined functions. The course concludes with study of bivariate and univariate statistics to develop necessary understanding and skills the students will need for their study of statistics in Algebra II.

Course Standards

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics call for a fresh approach to how mathematics education takes place in the classroom. Not only are teachers challenged to rethink math curriculum at every level, but it pushes students to strive to achieve ever higher expectations because college and career readiness is the goal for every student. Therefore we have two sets of standards within the CCSS: the standards for Mathematical Practices and the standards for Mathematical Content.

Lifelong Learning Standard

With the CCSS as the foundation, each and every class will focus on training students to become a lifelong learner. To accomplish this each class will incorporate problem solving strategies, learning utilizing visual resources, encapsulating lessons under Big Ideas and Essential Questions, incorporating interactive learning through online resources and differentiated instruction which addresses students’ gaps in prior learning.

Parents as Partners

At Hammond High Magnet School, all parental conferences are to be scheduled through the grade level counselor.

-          9th Grade Alice Broussard – 985-474-8617

-          10th & 11th Grade Loretta Evans – 985-474-8607

-          PDP & 12th Grade Miya Nelson – 985-474-8608

All parents are encouraged to check their students’ progress daily through the parent command option.

Methods of Assessment

The year will begin with a diagnostic assessment to determine the current level of mastery of each student. Formative assessments will be given on a daily basis through the use of interactive technology and resources during the class and therefore cannot be made up. Summative assessment will be given through the use of quizzes (weekly) tests (at the completion of each chapter) and Semester exams. Students who are absent when a summative assessment is given will be required to take the assessment after school following the HHMS school-wide policy for making up assessments. Online course work will have built in formative and summative assessments as well.

Homework is an essential component to mastering Algebra I and therefore is required. Homework will consist of completing handouts, watching videos, or working through an interactive tool, as well as online assessments.  Homework is graded for completion. Students must show all work to earn credit.  Late homework is not accepted.

Mrs. Dunn’s BYOD Policy - We will use technology in our class.  You will keep your device out of site until it is time to use it.  It should not be seen nor heard.  When devices are used in Algebra class, HHMS BYOD policy will be followed.

Board-Approved Grading Scale

A 90% to 100%

B 80% to 89%

C 70% to 79%

D 60% to 69%

F 59% and below

Tutoring

Tutoring is available on Wednesday and Thursday, after school from 2:30 – 3:30.

A Math Lab will be made available at that time.

Materials:

·         Pencils with erasers or mechanical pencils

·         Loose Leaf Paper

  • pocket folder (only if you choose a spiral notebook)

·         Binder (at least 1 inch) or spiral notebook

Make-Up Work

We have a school-wide make-up policy which is outlined in the HHMS handbook which is online.

Be Respectful!     Be Responsible!    Be Safe!     Be Your Best!
