WELCOME BACK!

I am very happy that we are able to come back to school although it is going to look much different than we are used to during the COVID 19 pandemic. We are going to work together to adjust to our new normal and be successful this year.

Advanced Placement courses are electives that can be used to earn college credit while still in high school. To be successful in this course, you must be self-motivated and be willing to work. You will read, watch instructional videos, study your vocabulary and maps at home. You will use class time to take tests and quizzes, write FRQs and discuss the content with your classmates and me.

AP Human Geography consists of 7 units. We will take 2-3 weeks to complete each unit. We will finish units 1-4 first semester and units 5-7 second semester before Mardi Gras. We will review writing and content between Mardi Gras and test day. Our exam day is Tuesday, May 4, 2021

Grading:

1. Rubenstein Key Issue Packets(P) This is where you will read the text, watch the review videos and fill in your studyguides. You may have some time to do this in class, but most of your reading and videos must be done at home. Although this is participation, this is where you are learning what you need to know for the test. If you don’t read and watch the videos, you have no hope of earning a passing grade on the unit tests. So, to encourage you to stay on pace, if you complete all of your classwork on time, you will be eligible for 20 bonus points on each unit test.

2. Vocabulary quizzes for each chapter. (MA) These will consist of Multiple Choice, Fill in the Blank and Discussion.

3. Map tests (AA)  You will have to read maps on the AP Exam that are not labeled. You will need to know countries, bodies of water, land forms, regions etc........

4. Face to Face discussions (AA)  Due to Covid-19, our state can at any time be in Phase 1, 2, or 3. No matter which phase we are in, students and teachers still must communicate regularly. Our Face to Face discussions can either be in person, via Zoom, via Google Classroom Meet, or via telephone (at the teacher’s discretion). You will have two Face to Face grades per week.

5. Collegeboard (AA and P)- Collegeboard has an excellent review for each unit.

6. FRQ (Free Response Questions) (MA and AA)

7. Unit Exams (MA)

8. There may be additional grades throughout the year.

Grading, continued…

Please use Powerschool for accurate grades. Below you will find a statement from Springfield High regarding using grades in Google Classroom.

Disclaimer: Parents and Students, please note that you should only use PowerSchool to see an accurate grade calculation, as we use weighted grades in high school.  I may enter grades in Google Classroom to track performance and participation, but once transferred to PowerSchool, the category weights will take effect. PowerSchool is accurate, not Google Classroom!

Phase II COVID 19

Each student is assigned either A day or B day or C day to attend school. On the days students are not in attendance, students are expected to learn virtually from home. Attendance will be counted by student participation in virtual assignments. If a student does not complete assignments on the virtual day, they will be counted absent and will have a zero in the gradebook. Students will complete as survey which will tell me the times/ days of the week they have computer and internet access and I will plan assignments accordingly.
