Wednesday Wellness Tips

Playing board games is an excellent way to get together and strengthen your family bond.

One of the effects of playing board games is laughter and it has been found out that this increases endorphins. This chemical in our body is known to elevate the feeling of happiness.

The areas of the brain that are responsible for complex thought and memory formation

are the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. These parts most benefits when playing board games together and strengthen your family bond.

Playing board games keeps your mind engaged by exercising it and building it stronger.

It’s good to note that stronger brain has lower risks of cognitive decline.

As playing board games effects to laughing and endorphins. These things can help lower or maintain blood pressure.

Playing board games help children develop their logic and reasoning skills, improve critical thinking and boost spatial reasoning. The ability to concentrate and focus for a longer period of time

is also developed with just playing board games.

Most types of board games require players to use fine motor skills to pick up or move pieces

which are actions that both involves coordination and dexterity. And have been found out that can really be helpful when added to occupational therapy treatments.

As always, drink plenty of water and get lots of rest.

Wednesday Wellness Tips

Adding walking to your daily activities can help you:  Reduce risk of heart disease, improve your blood pressure, improve your blood sugar levels, enhance your mental well-being, maintain a healthy weight, strengthen your bones, and improve your balance and coordination.

Keep positive thoughts on your minds.  Have a gratitude challenge with your family. Customize this to your family so you can take on this challenge.  Give everyone their own gratitude journals, a jar to put daily gratitude reminders or a group message board.

Find something to be grateful for every day.

As always, drink plenty of water and get lots of rest.

Wednesday Wellness Tips

Playing with jigsaw puzzles helps to enhance mental and intellectual growth in young children.

It also improves hand-eye coordination.

Jigsaw puzzles are easy on the eyes, as there is no backlight and no glare that slowly wears down your vision, as opposed to today’s internet, video games and television.

Assembling jigsaw puzzles helps to clear your mind and relax. You will feel delight as you see the puzzle getting closer and closer to completion with every piece you piece together. Not to mention, the sense of achievement and satisfaction when you complete your jigsaw puzzle!

Vegetables and fruits are loaded with prebiotic fiber, vitamins, minerals, and many antioxidants, some of which have potent biological effects.

Studies show that people who eat the most vegetables and fruits have a lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and other illnesses.

Nuts are an ideal nutritious snack.  They are linked to a reduced risk of heart disease and may help prevent certain cancers, depression, and other illnesses.  Despite being relatively high in fat, they are very filling.

Drink plenty of water and get lots of rest.

Wednesday Wellness Tips

Doing aerobic exercise is one of the best things you can do for your mental and physical health.

Although some people find it hard to find and keep the motivation to change unhealthy habits, more and more studies are demonstrating that using devices to monitor physical activity, such as basic pedometers that count every step we take, is an effective way for people to increase it.

Eat a healthy snack - Apples are high in fiber and polyphenol antioxidants that improve your healthand reduce heart disease risk.

Peanut butter may have additional benefits for heart health. It has been shown to increase HDL (good) cholesterol and reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides.

Drink plenty of water and get lots of rest.

School Year Plan 2021-2022:

August

We hada great start to the school year.  The kids come to P.E. class on an every other day rotation.  We ask that the kids wear P.E. appropriate shoes each time they attend P.E. class.  We will be participaing in a variety of activities all year long.

The kindergarten kids started the year by playing games that involve locomotor skills and personal space awareness.  The kids in first and second grades participated in combatives and locomotor skill games.

Cooperatives and Coordination games are happening during the middle and near the end of August and beginning of September.  These activities will promote using both hands to improve hand-eye coordination and teamwork/cooperation in groups.  The kids will be gathering noodle pieces to work together to build towers.  Cup stacking is a great activity to increase the use of both hands.

September

The kids in all classes participated in some bean bag activities to promote hand eye coordination.

October

The kids will started off the month working on hand eye coordination.  This is a skill we revisit throughout the school year.

As the month progressed we moved on to our jump rope unit in preparation for our Kids Heart Challenge event.  The kids are learning many individual, partner, and long rope skills.  This unit is always a fun-filled one.

November

The Kids Heart Challenge  will happened on November 4th and 5th.  The kids' skills get better and stronger throughout the unit.  They will learn many beginner, intermediate and advanced skills for their ages.  The skills are getting them ready for the fun on November 4th and 5th for our KHC events.  We have most of our kids sign up to participate.  It is always fun to see the kids showing off their skills and jumping rope with the teachers.  All of our KHC events will take place during the school day.  We are so proud to have raised around $25,000 last year for the American Heart Association.  Hopefully we will be able to give them a nice donation this year, too.  As a thank you gift from AHA, we will receive gift certificates from US Games to purchase new PE equipment.

December

In December the kids will participate in balance activities.  We will progress into more balance activities with our new balance boards and also the obstacle course.

 January

During the month of January we plan to particpate in a lot of activites relating to ball handling.  The kids were very active with rolling and standing passes.  We did some individual and partner skills first then moved to games.  We hope to play the games "Clean The House", "Pin Knockout", and "Bombardment".    We will do some ball handling stations at the end of the unit to reinforce dribbling and passing.  The kids will also have a chance to shoot baskets.

February

February is always a busy month.  We will start off with rhythm and dance.  We will do a variety of large group participation songs working on moving in motion together.  Next will be hula hoops  and scarf juggling skills.  The skills hula hoops and scarves for juggling improve coordination.  The P.E. Show hopefully will happen on February 3rd.   Each grade level will show skills and activities that we do in PE class.  We are very grateful to our administation and PTA for supporting the PE program.

The next units we will be moving into are juggling scarves to improve hand eye coordination.  The kids will start with one scarf and move to two and three scarves for this activity.

The next unit we have planned for after the Winter Break in February is striking.  The kids participate in this unit with our foam paddles and foam balls.  We do a variety of activities with striking.  We work a lot on hand eye coordination to strike the ball up.  The kids are given the opportunity to strike the ball at bucket targets.  This is a great activity to establish striking skills that will be used later in game/sport situations.

March

March will continue our striking unit.  As this is going on we will be conducting the spring fitness test with the first and second grade students.  Those children will participate in sit-ups, shuttle run, pull-ups, sit and reach, and mile run/walk.  Kids who improve on four of the the five test items will receive a "Kennesaw Improvement Award".  All children will be graded and those scoring high enough will receive the Presidential, National, or Standard Physical Fitness Award.  The results of the testing will be sent home in May before school gets out.

April

In April we plan to do some recreation games with Hopscotch and Four Square.  At the end of April we will have our Field Days.  We hope for sunshine and lots of fun.  Parents - we couldn't do this without your help and support.  We hope to see you there.

May

For our final month of school we will be participaing in diamond games and then our fitness stations in the gym.
