  Parental Involvement

The West New York School District is dedicated to maximizing all students’ potential for success.  As their child’s first teacher, promoting and maintaining a positive relationship with parents/grandparents/guardians is vital to the success of our students.

How is the WNY Parental Involvement Program structured?
Consistent with the National Network of Partnership Schools, the structure is as follows:

  • Type I—Parenting:  Assisting families with parenting and child-rearing skills and setting home conditions to support children as students at each grade level.

  • Type II—Communicating:  Communicate with families about school programs and student progress.

  • Type III—Volunteering:  Involve families as volunteers and audiences at the school or in other locations to support students and school programs.

  • Type IV—Learning at Home:  Involve families with their children in learning activities at home, including homework.

  • Type V—Decision-Making:  Include families as participants in school decisions.

  • Type VI—Collaborating with the Community: Coordinate resources and services.

What activities are available for parents?

A certified teacher at each elementary school, the Parent Facilitator, and a parent from the school, the Parent Partner, work jointly to organize a variety of parent activities:

  • Workshops during the school day presented by the Parent Facilitator include: “Teaching Your Child Through Storytelling,” and “Homework, Is It a Problem?”

  • Parent/child trips/presentations to view productions of children’s literature such as Charlotte’s Web or informational presentations such as The Jack-Sprat Low-Fat World Tour.

  • Evening workshops presented by district specialists such as the Elementary Substance Awareness Coordinator on topics including “Substance Abuse Prevention” and through community services, such as North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue presenting “Fire Prevention and Safety.”

  • Workshops presented by out-of-district consultants, such as the Liberty Science Center, address academic needs.

  • Workshops for parents of middle and high school students, at various times of the day, presenting pertinent information.

Are there opportunities for parents to participate?

Yes, other activities for parents to participate include:

  • Participating in PTA/PTO activities that include fund raisers such as book fairs, candy drives and plant sales to support the needs of the school.
  • Becoming a member of the Annual School Plan Committee at their child’s school.  Members representing all stakeholders, including parents, are included in this planning and leadership committee.
  • Parents are welcomed into the schools to attend “Back to School Night,” and/or “Parent's Night” when they can learn first hand from their child’s teachers what their child will be doing throughout the school year and how they can help to ensure their child’s success.

How can I get more information about the program?

In addition to the school administrators and the student’s teacher, each school has a Parent Facilitator who coordinates the program at that school.  The program supervisor, Eileen Calderone, is also available to assist you.  She may be contacted by email at [email protected] or by phone at (201) 553-4000 ext. 32115.
