Fluency is the "school word" for reading a passage correctly, not too fast or too slow, with expression.  Good reading fluency boosts comprehension (remembering and getting meaning from what you read.)

We do a "cold read" and a "hot read".  Cold reads are usually on Monday.  The cold read is the first time the student reads the passage.  Throughout the week we practice reading the passage.  The hot reads are usually done on Friday.  For the hot read the student reads the same passage he/she, and I record how many words they read altogether.  Students will have one minute to read the passage for both cold and hot reads.

Ways to help your student:
-read the passage with them every night.
-read it to the student so they can hear what it should sound like.
-have the student read the whole passage without being timing.  Then give him/her one minute and see how many words they read.  This way the student can see success.
-ask your student questions about the passage to check for understanding.

Reading Fluency Target Rates (From Ga. Performance Standards):

First Grade: 60 words correct per minute
Second Grade: 90 words correct per minute
Third Grade: 120 words correct per minute
Fourth Grade: 25 books or book equivalents (approximately 1,000,000 words per year)
Fifth Grade: 25 books or book equivalents (approximately 1,000,000 words per year)
