Student Expectations



COURSE DESCRIPTION

This language arts class is an intensive reading and writing course which will occur in two consecutive class periods. We will cover various forms of literature including short stories, novels, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and drama. The writing assignments will vary in order to expose the students to writing for numerous purposes. Students will also have an intense preparation for the NJSLA.


ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT

This class is also designed to improve students’ writing skills. We will be working on various types of writing for numerous purposes. Students will have a writing folder provided and kept in the classroom. We will be setting goals and paying special attention to problem areas using the writing folder. In order to earn an above average grade in this course you will have to put forth effort and time into all assignments.


CLASS GUIDELINES

1. Come to class on time.

2. Be sure to bring all class materials such as your literature book, notebook, journal book, pen/pencil, and folder. At no time will you be permitted to go to your locker to get these materials after the bell rings.

3. Sharpen pencil before the bell rings and be in your seat working on the Warm Up.

4. Use the bathroom for emergency purposes. Asking during a class discussion/activity is inappropriate.

5. Follow all directions on the board. For example, if I ask you to have your writing folder or notebook before class begins, have it on the corner of your desk before the bell.

6. Remain in your seat at all times until class is dismissed.

7. Always raise your hand during class discussions.

8. Always work quietly during class activities. No talking is permitted.

9. Clean up any and all materials used during class to keep our room neat. Be sure to check the floor under your desk as well!

10. Be responsible for finding out assignments missed due to an absence in class. I will not seek you out. You need to ask me before I start class on the day you return to school from an absence.

11. Always be respectful to your teacher and fellow classmates.

1.  Chromebooks fully charged. 

2.  Chargers and headphones.

3.  Completed homework assignments

GRADING POLICY

Tests = 50%     Quizzes/Projects = 40%          Homework/Classwork = 10%        

HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK

Students are expected to complete all homework/class work assignments by the due date. Late assignments will not be accepted. Homework is given several times a week. Studying for quizzes and tests is considered homework!

CLASS PARTICIPATION

Your participation grade is determined by what you contribute to the class. Following the rules stated in the class guidelines will reflect positively on your participation grade. Non-compliance will reflect negatively on your participation grade.

LATE WORK

Late work will only be accepted for absent purposes. For example, if you are absent for two days, you will have two days to make up the work. After the allotted time your grade will become a zero if you do not make up the work.


FOOD/DRINK

NO 

food (candy, gum, snacks, lollipops, etc.) or drinks (soda, juice, etc.) are allowed in my classroom.
