Description:

The class is designed to increase student’s understanding of the visual, applied, and performing arts.  Students will explore the creative processes, historical styles, periods, and movements in art, as well as investigate the impact that the arts have on contemporary society.

 

Goals:

  • To have a basic understanding of fundamental concepts and vocabulary prevalent in the arts.
  • To explore historical figures, places, and events significant in the development of the arts, specializing in Western civilizations.
  • To be an informed consumer in the field of entertainment, the performing arts, and visual art.

 

Evaluation:

Students will be evaluated through a weighted scale in the following areas:

      Semester Exam (15%), Major Assessments (40%), Graded for Accuracy (35%),

      Completion or Participation (10%)

Course Schedule:

 

First Semester

 

Unit 1: Students will analyze the language of the arts, how the humanities are inclusive, and how to be a descriptive, interpretive, and evaluative art critic.

Unit 2: Students will analyze and survey the history of dance.

Unit 3: Students will discover and explore the various genres associated with the theatre.

 

Second Semester

 

Unit 5: Students will analyze the elements used in musical compositions and performances.

Unit 6: Students will experience the various processes and media used in the language of visual arts.
