“FIVE FOR LIFE PROGRAM”

Five For Life is the newly adopted K-12 physical education curriculum.  The “Five For Life Program” prepares students for a healthy lifestyle by giving them a solid foundation of how to maintain or improve fitness levels in each of the five components of fitness; cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and body composition.  The desired learning from the curriculum is for students to understand how activity and nutritional choices affect the balance of body composition, long-term health and performance, so students can make informed decisions about their fitness and health.  The program was written by physical educators who value the traditional P.E. program (acquisition of sport and recreational skills), but realize that comprehensive programs should be connected to a foundation of fitness and health.  The curriculum delivers concepts through activity-based lessons that blend into the traditional P.E. program.  Student understanding of the importance of fitness and health is the top priority of the curriculum.  It is no longer assumed that fitness will be a by-product of activity alone.
