Grading Policy for World Cultures/Geography
Class Rules
1) Be on time
2) Be prepared for class. (You need to have all materials required for class)
3) Be respectful of yourself and others. ( No profanity, talking back)
4) Be aware of the rules and the consequences of breaking rules in the student handbook. These rules will be strictly enforced
5) Follow classroom procedures during class. WE WILL REVIEW THESE!!!
6) No eating or drinking. This includes gum and candy.
7) No use of any electronic devices such as cell phones, iPods, headphones, CD/DVD players. Cell phone discipline will be handled according to school rules
Consequences
1) First offense – verbal warning
2) Second offense – parent contact
3) Third offense – Discipline referral to the dean’s office with parent contact
Tardiness will be handled according to the rules in the student handbook.
Major acts of misconduct will result in an automatic referral.
You should read the student handbook carefully as all the rules in the handbook are enforced in this classroom.
No talking before, during or after a test. This means that there is to be NO TALKING UNTIL ALL TESTS ARE TAKEN UP!!! If you talk during a test this is an automatic zero regardless of whether or not I have already taken up your test. I DO NOT GIVE IN ON THESE RULES!!! If I do not have an assignment for you after a test then I suggest you bring a book or a magazine to read after you have completed your test.

9th GRADE WORLD CULTURES/GEOGRAPHY SYLLABUS
The objectives for this class are:
1) Identify and explain the five themes of geography
2) Understand how various cultures develop in relation to geography
3) Identify and use various map symbols.
4) Identify and use various types of maps.
5) Identify the various physical and cultural aspects of regions in countries.
COURSE OUTLINE—The following topics are what we will be covering in this class.
1 Introduction to World Cultures and geography
2 The United States and Canada
3 Latin America
4 Europe, Russia and the Independent Republics
5 North Africa and Southwest Asia
6 Africa South of the Sahara
7 Southern Asia
8 Asia
Materials needed:
1) Pencils or pens Blue or Black ink only, no other colors such as neon colored ink are to be used.
2) Loose-leaf, notebook paper and a spiral notebook that is perforated.
3) Folder to keep paper and assignments in.
I do keep pencils and pens for students to purchase for 10 cents. If a student has to borrow a pencil or paper from me then their assignment for that day will have a 10-point reduction.
Homework is due the day after it is assigned. If you do not turn it in when it is due then you will receive a grade of zero and YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO MAKE IT UP. If you are absent the day an assignment is due then make sure YOU turn it in as soon as you come back to school. I will not ask for it so it will be your responsibility to make sure you put it in the homework tray.
If you are absent when an assignment is given then it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to make sure YOU ask me for the make up assignment when you come back. If the absence is excused then you will have three days to make up the work and turn it in to me. If you are suspended or are in TOZ it is your responsibility to ask me for the work and you will receive a grade of 75 for the assignments.
I DO NOT ACCEPT LATE WORK!!!!!! EXTRA CREDIT WORK WILL NOT BE GIVEN

ACTIVITY EXPECTATIONS
Note taking
Conversation: There should be no talking while we are taking notes.
Help: Raise your hand if you need help. If you are working on a problem and I am helping another student, wait until I finish helping the student that I am with to raise your hand. Continue to work while you wait.
Activity: We will be taking notes from the overhead projector.
Movement: There shouldn’t be any movement while I am teaching. If you need to sharpen your pencil or get a textbook, you should do so once you come into the classroom.
Participation: I will know that you are participating by having your notebook open while you are writing the notes into the notebook.
Classwork
Conversation: You may talk with someone in a seat next to you. While you are working, you should only talk about that material that is being covered. Once your assignment is complete, you may talk with a student near you in an acceptable volume.
Help: Raise your hand if you need help. If you are working on a problem and I am helping another student, wait until I finish helping the student that I am with to raise your hand. Continue to work while you wait. You may also ask a classmate seated near you.
Activity: You will be working on an assignment from the textbook or on a worksheet.
Movement: While we are completing our classwork, you may get out of your seat to sharpen your pencil or throw trash away. Return to your desk immediately.
Participation: I will know that you are participating by having your textbook or worksheet on your desk and you are writing on the assignment.
Computer Activities: There is to be no talking while working at the computers.
Teacher Directed Activities: There is to be no talking while the teacher is directing whole group activities.
Activity Expectations:

Help: Check with your face or shoulder partner to get help. If no one within your group can answer the question, then all group members should raise their hand to notify me that you need help.
Activity: We will be using a variety of structures while working within groups to complete a task or assignment.
Movement: During our cooperative learning assignments, I will designate which group members should get up to collect the assigned materials. Unless you are told to do otherwise, stay at your table.
Participation: I will know that you are participating by having the assigned materials out at your desk while you talk with your group mates.
I have read the above expectations for each activity and will acknowledge and follow them in class.
