There are multiple ways to encourage literacy at home and help your child fall in love with reading!

Read Aloud & Model Reading
  • Read daily: Make reading aloud a consistent part of your routine.
  • Read a variety of texts: Include books, comics, magazines, and informational texts.
  • Model good reading habits: Let your child see you reading for pleasure, setting an example for them. It doesn't have to be a book! It can be a magazine or even the newspaper!
Create a Literacy-Rich Environment
  • Keep books handy: Make sure books, magazines, and other reading materials are easily accessible in your home.
  • Make it inviting: Create a cozy and dedicated reading nook to encourage your child to spend time with books.
  • Visit the library: Take your child to the library regularly to find new and interesting reading materials.
Engage in Conversations & Storytelling
  • Talk with your child: Engage in frequent conversations about their day and interests to build their vocabulary and oral language skills.
  • Ask questions: Before, during, and after reading, ask questions to help with comprehension and stimulate critical thinking.
  • Encourage storytelling: Ask your child to tell you stories and help them write down the words they use.
Incorporate Literacy into Everyday Activities
  • Write together: Involve your child in writing grocery lists or letters.
  • Read labels and instructions: Look at food labels, read recipes while cooking, or follow directions for a DIY project together.
  • Label things: Hang different kinds of print around the house, such as labeling household objects, to show the importance of reading.
Make it Fun & Interactive
  • Play word games: Create or play games like I Spy, scavenger hunts, or even make homemade literacy games to build skills.
  • Use technology: Utilize educational apps and e-books to make reading interactive and engaging.
  • Get silly: Make reading time fun and imaginative by changing your voice or acting out parts of the story.
