Choose activities from the list below. You can create models of your ideas as drawings or 3D creations! Use the Engineering Design Process to help you plan and create!

 

  • Design and build something out of snow!

  • Create a musical instrument with materials from around your house

  • Build a bridge that can hold a heavy book

  • If you have a broken toy, create a new one

  • Make two congruent towers out of blocks, legos or k’nex

  • Repurpose a box (cereal box, oatmeal box, cardboard box, etc…)

  • Design a container to protect a chip or cracker from breaking if it is dropped

  • Assemble a pulley system to lift a bucket

  • Create a domino chain reaction where objects knock each other over

  • Find something in your house that’s broken and try to fix it

  • Build cardboard, furniture, or blanket forts

  • Create a code, write a message, and deliver it to someone (along with the code) to try to decipher it.

  • Plant seeds in an upcycled container (empty soda bottle or milk carton). Decide where you will keep the planter, and how much sunlight and water it should get.

  • Build the setting to a book you read or a story that you created 

  • Design a tool

  • Go for a hike

  • Design a boat that floats and holds weight (like pennies, rocks or marbles)

  • Think about a favorite character:

    • Design a brand new toy for your character
    • Design a new item of clothing that your character will love and that will help the character in some way
    • Design a gadget that will help the character to help others
    • Design an item that will change the character’s life and become the feature of a whole new story
    • Design a mode of transportation for the character
    • Design a home, hideout, or space to relax for the character
    • Design a gadget that will help the character solve a problem
    • Design any of these ideas for yourself or your family!

  • Sketch a blueprint for a new amusement park. What rides would you have? How would they be arranged throughout the park? What else would you need to include in the park?

  • Build a craft stick catapult to see how far you can launch a ball

  • Fashion a parachute

  • Double a recipe and make it for your family

  • Make marble mazes

  • Create a shelter for an animal that lives in your yard.  Worms! Beetles! Bugs! 

  • Go Plogging! Jog and pick up plastic garbage in a bag while you are running

  • Draw and label a map of your room, house, yard, property, or neighborhood
