.Grading Policy.
In my course, I use a total point system. This means that each of the assignments that students complete over the course of the quarter averages into one final grade. Mathematically, this looks like:
Points Earned x 100 %
Total Potential Points
This grading structure means that each assignment or assessement is an opportunity for students to gain points to raise their grade. Additionally, it means that as there are increasingly more assignments over the quarter, an individual assignment's weight decreases. This enables students the opportunity to bounce back from any poor homework or test grades.
Placing grading weights is anthithetical to this grading policy, so instead, below I have provided some sample point values for assignments in my course:
Achieve 3000 - 10 pts
IXL - 9 pts
Essay Writing - 50 pts
Participation - 50 pts (graded twice per semester at 25 pts each time)
Journals - 40 pts (graded twice per semester at 20 pts each time)
.Classroom Expectations.
In the beginning of the year, students and I came up with our class norms that we would like to establish in the classroom. The following are the rules that we came up with:
- Respect one another, myself, and your environment.
- Be honest.
- Come prepared for class.
- One microphone at a time.
- Come as you are.
