Red folder (homework/news/forms)
A red folder will be sent home every day. A newsletter will be placed in the front of the folder on Monday and any forms that will need to be returned to school. Any homework assignments that the students may have for that day will be in the homework pocket in-class assignments will be in the classwork side of the folder. Please be sure to go over these papers with your child. Please return the folder and completed homework assignments and signed forms the next school day.
Homework:
In first grade, we cannot grade homework, but completing and sending it back to school is encouraged. Homework you would expect to see in the “Homework” side of your child’s red folder will be a newsletter and skills that we are currently working on. You may also find copies of the CKLA worksheets in their CKLA workbooks. These are not always an everyday occurrence due to the curriculum schedule. The same goes for Wit and Wisdom our (reading) curriculum. Most days math “i-Ready” will have practice pages, these will have a green heading on the top and follow the skills we did that day. I give students stickers and encouragement as a reward.
Green folder (graded papers)
Your child will bring home a green folder. This folder will contain all the grades from the tests given the previous week(s). Please look over these papers with your child and keep the papers at home with you. Seeing their mistakes is crucial for learning and should not be a shameful experience, especially at this age. The front of the folder has a place for you to sign that you have received your child’s graded papers. Be sure to keep these graded papers and return the folder the next school day. I try my very best to send them home
biweekly.
Water bottles:
You may send a water bottle to school with your child to keep in the classroom. Please do not send anything other than water. We have a refill station outside of our classroom. New school policy bans Stanley cups.
Toys/personal items:
Please make sure your child does NOT bring toys, purses, electronics, or art supplies.
These items can be very distracting and can be broken or stolen. All art supplies will be provided by the school/ supply list. Students will be provided a pencil bag with crayons, scissors, glue, and pencils. I do not mind pencils as long as they keep them safe in the pencil bags.
I also suggest against bulky jewelry that may become lost, broken, distracting, or stolen.
Parties and “special days”
Call me old-fashioned, but I keep special dress-up/themed days to a minimum. We have so much to cover and need all the concentration we can get!! Every teacher does their celebrations differently and may or may not do certain things. We of course will celebrate major holidays and school-wide dress-up days. To me, this makes these days more special… My primary focus is your child’s education.
PBIS:
This is when your child can cash in their “Kitty Bucks” for rewards. I will send home a sheet with the amount and the rewards that can be purchased.
Rapid Reader Reading Log:
I will provide a reading log sheet that you and your child can complete for a small reward and a running count for an end-of-the-year competition. I will have a stack of empty forms available in the classroom. This is to encourage reading every day at home.
Parent/Teacher conferences:
You can directly reach me by using the Class Dojo App or email me at [email protected]. My office hours are Monday through Friday 6:30 am to 4:30 pm. I will not receive message notifications past that time.
Using these methods, we can schedule a call, Google Meet, or an in-person conference before school.
School Fees and Supplies: Copy is attached in packet
First grade fees are $40.00. This fee pays for workbooks and all other school supplies INCLUDING 1st Grade t-shirts that will be ordered soon. The office has asked, that all payments be paid online at https://osp.osmsinc.com/livingstonlaportal/
If you are unable to do this, please talk to the office 225-664-9711
Absences:
Please read the section on Attendance in the school handbook. Most tests are given on Thursday & Friday, so please make every effort for your child to attend school on these days unless there is an illness. Make-up tests are sometimes difficult to schedule and give in a timely manner.
Jackets:
I keep my classroom a little chilly, so I would highly suggest your child have a light jacket. Having their name written on their jacket will ensure I can get lost jackets returned to the right student.

Discipline plan/behavior notes:
At the end of the school day, your child will mark their planners with a stamp and reflect on the day. Please check for notes and sign every day. If their “clip” is in any color other than green, you will have a note to explain. Students start every school day on green and have the opportunity to move up or down. Students who meet behavior expectations and do something awesome that day will move up to Gold. I remind students if rules or expectations are not followed. We all make mistakes, but if the student repeats that same behavior after the reminder, the clip will be pulled.
Clip Chart Levels:
Green: Excellent
Orange: ready to learn
Yellow: official warning
Blue: note home of behavior
Red: parent conference/ note
The following behaviors will result in an automatic time out of recess and will be communicated to the students so that they understand the consequences:
- Bullying Behavior:
- Playing in the bathroom/ hallways. (this could result in injury)
- Destruction of school property
- Hitting, biting, slapping, kicking, pushing, and any other violent behavior (severity may warrant other measures) I do NOT tolerate these behaviors...
