Curriculum Overview:
The Social Studies curriculum is integrated throughout our Language Arts program. The fifth grade units of study are as a follows:
Unit 1: We the People: focuses on the first government of our country and the setting up of the Constitution
Unit 2: Manifest Destiny: focuses on the expansion of our nation in the early years and how we grew from the original 13 colonies in the early 1800s
Unit 3: Freedom and Amistad: focuses on the Civil War, reasons behind the war, and the topic of slavery
Unit 4: Reconstruction: focuses on rights of the citizen and rebuilding of our nation after the Civil War
Unit 5: WWII Holocaust Education: Focuses on what the Holocaust was and touches on the Japanese Internment during World War II
Unit 6: Women's Rights/Intro to Civil Rights: focuses on the amendments that allows everyone to vote and our rights as a citizen
Unit 7: Civil Rights and Amistad: Continuation of the previous unit
Unit 8: Career Exploration: Students explore careers that interest them and research as to what the career entails and how to achieve their career of choice.
