 BE RESPECTFUL

  • Play your instrument only when given permission by the director.

BE RESPONSIBLE

  • Bring your instrument in working order, ALL music, method books, instrument supplies (oil, reeds, etc.), pencils, and folders that are needed for lessons and rehearsals.

  • Come to class prepared. In class we rehearse, which means we work on how each individual part fits into the whole. At home you practice, which means you work out your own part before you come back to class. We will accomplish much more in class when you practice your own part at home. CONSISTENT, AT HOME PRACTICE IS NECESSARY TO SUCCEED IN BAND.

PRACTICE EXPECTATIONS

Like any life pursuit, consistent at home practice will ensure that students are successful and have a meaningful and fun experience. Regular home practice reinforces the learning concepts that are presented in class and is necessary to experience success in playing a musical instrument. To achieve this, students are expected to practice at least two times a week for 15 minutes (for a total of 30 minutes), more practice time is highly recommended. Students should work on correct posture, breathing, long tones, rhythms, assignments from their method book, and concert music.

In order for students to be successful, the parents are encouraged to:

1. Provide a quiet place for practice

2. Encourage regular practice in a positive manner. Students may not be able to hear/perceive daily improvement, but it is happening. Short concentrated efforts are more productive. Just like any other school subject, music has homework.

3. Listen to your student play. Give encouragement and praise and show commitment to their study. Some aspects of music can be learned very quickly while other techniques may require more practice.
