Spanish III
Course Description:
This is a College Prep Course. This course develops the skills that were introduced in Spanish II. Students are encouraged to express themselves in the target language by practicing not only the writing and reading skills but conversational skills. About 85-90% of the class will be conducted in Spanish. The course will also continue to expose students to different cultural aspects of the Hispanic society. Brief summary and hit on the aspects of Spanish II that need to be reinforced so that the students can continue with the language.
Students will begin by commenting on the current trends in food and dress of their peers and then investigating the ways of the Hispanic speaking countries and areas. We will then proceed to focus on purchasing of clothing, department stores and clothing stores, commenting on and ordering food in restaurants or cafes, and planning leisure time activities. Once the students have mastered their likes, wants and loves of food and clothing and assorted accessories, we will let them travel to different places by various means of transportation. With this information, students must create a number of different schedules, use vocabulary to purchase tickets, etc. We begin and end the subjunctive in this unit. It is a “mood” rather than a reality in grammar. It is the part of the language that is not comparable to any traditional aspects of the English language. At the end of the year, it brings together the student’s overall knowledge of the grammatical part of the language with the understanding of the classics that were written by Hispanic novelist, poets, etc. It touches on the different genres of writing and how we understand what the author was striving for or where the information and ideas came from. To do this we learn about the lives of the authors we will be reading and then begin to figure out the reason behind their writing.
