New York Knicks center Enes Kanter will not travel with the team to London on January 17th to face the Washington Wizards. Kanter will not be going to London for fears that he might be attacked or assassinated. These fears come from the fact that Kanter has been a critic of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Knicks center has said that he fears that President Erdogan might send spies to kill him if he leaves the United States. For the past few years Kanter has been very critical of Erdogan on social media and when asked about it after games. In March of 2018 Enes’ father, Mehmet Kanter was arrested in Turkey and faces 10 years in prison for criticizing the Turkish government. When asked if this will affect his play Kanter said:

“It’s very tough, I can’t show frustration or being sad or mad. I put my game mask on and focus on the game and being as good as I can be. But I receive death threats, it’s sad that I have to balance this.”
