Choir at Lakeside Middle School
My name is Ms. Dena Andrews and I am the choral music teacher at Lakeside Middle School. I am excited to announce the start of the 2021-2022 school year! Choir is open by audition to students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade. Students are placed in Concert Choir, Chorale or Schola Cantorum.
Goals
- Participation will enrich the quality of our lives and the lives of those for whom we sing, and we must always give our best.
- Choral singing will lead us to make positive and meaningful contributions to our own lives and the lives of others.
- Singing will help us to develop our presentation skills, performance and our voices in a healthy and confident manner.
- A knowledge of music will help us to understand the historical and theoretical nature of music, both as an academic subject and in practical application.
- Belonging to the choir will foster skills of collaboration, communication and critical thinking in the classroom.
- Singing great choral literature will lead us to understand that music is a powerful means of communication and helps celebrate diversity found all around the world.

Choir Expectations
- Rehearsal Attendance: Students are scheduled in their ensembles during the school day and are expected to come to class prepared and on time. 3 late arrivals will result in discipline referral.
- Performances:Choir members are expected to participate in all performances. Please plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early for all concerts dressed in concert attire. Concert dates are listed above.
- Concert Attire: Concert attire is Black dress attire. (No exceptions) If there are any questions of concerns please contact Ms. Andrews
- Grading: Choir is a performance based class. Students will be given a weekly rehearsal grade, tests, quizzes, singing hearings and projects throughout the course of the year. 60%-Weekly Rehearsal 40%-Concert Attendance/Tests. Students complete a Final in June.
- Behavior: It is expected that students in the choir program behave well at all times—on stage, in rehearsal or during out of school trips. We represent Lakeside Middle School and set a standard for our school. If a student has difficulty meeting this behavior expectation she/he may be dismissed from choir for the remainder of the school year. Progression to be followed is: 1. student will be given warning, 2. letter will be sent home, and 3. removal.
- Materials: Students must come prepared to class. Music will be provided. Students must have: a two-pocket folder to keep their music in at school, and a pencil each day for class, if student fails to be prepared weekly rehearsal grades will be affected.
- Illness: If a student is sick or feeling unwell, students may be provided with alternative assignments during the class period.
- Google Classroom: Students will be using Google Classroom for all assignments.
