Studying Techniques

Preparation:

  • Take good notes in class

    • If a teacher reviews the answers, make corrections in colorful ink (it helps you remember!)

  • Stay organized - coordinate folders and notebooks in the same colors!

  • Get rid of distractions

    • Put away your computers/cell phones/video games & turn off the TV (I know, I know...)

    • NO multi-tasking!

  • Get comfortable

  • Do a little bit over a long period of time, NOT a lot over a short period of time - Cramming doesn't work!

  • Take a break when you notice you're not focusing as well anymore

Study Hacks:

  • Create flashcards; vocab word on one side and...

    • definition on the other side

    • picture on the other side

    • fill-in-the-blank sentence on the other side

  • Create DIGITAL flashcards

  • Create a Google Slides study guide

    • add pictures or emojis that help you understand the information

  • Create a practice test/quiz/game on www.kahoot.com

  • Create an Outline

  • Rewrite your notes - Only the parts you're having a hard time remembering!

  • Go through your notes, use color pencils to underline the important parts and/or summarize paragraphs

  • Ask a friend/family member to quiz you (in a random order)

  • Teach what you're studying to a friend/family member/pet/stuffed animal - Teaching others is the best way to learn!

  • Use mnemonic devices to remember order

    • For example:Never Eat Soggy Waffles - North, East, South, West

  • Create graphic organizers, Venn diagrams, lists, etc
