About the Teacher

 

Mr. Wright teaches 4th Grade Social Studies and Science at Roy Neal Shelling Elementary. He holds a Master of Arts in History from the University of Louisiana Monroe and brings over a decade in education, with classroom experiences spanning elementary, middle, and high school, as well as university-level instruction as an adjunct lecturer at ULM.

 

Social studies is his home discipline, and he is known for teaching content students can touch. He has taken students to walk the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, tour the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, climb the steps of the Louisiana State Capitol, and sit in the mayor's chair at Monroe City Hall. At Minnie Ruffin Elementary, his 5th grade classroom operated as "CSI: Colonial Scene Investigators," where students wore badges and investigated primary source documents- the exact skill Louisiana's state tests measure. He teaches science the same way; observation, evidence, and explanation.

 

Mr. Wright was named Teacher of the Year at Bastrop Junior High School in 2020 and received the Excellence in Education Award from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Omicron Iota Omega Chapter at the CAMEO Awards in March 2021. He is a published author, has visited 9 presidential libraries and has toured the homes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison.

 

Now in his second year at Shelling, his goal for 4th grade is a classroom where students investigate, question, and explain the world around them.
