CHORUS SYLLABUS

Welcome to the Wossman High School Choir. It is my philosophy that learning is more effective when students enjoy the subject matter as well as the process of learning. To that end, we have selected fun peices of music to explore while utilizing technology for singing analysis with appropriate vocal technique, music-reading, critical listening, and other general musical skills. Structure is paramount to the learing process so here are a few of our classroom rules.

Class Rules

-          Arrive on time for class every day,

-          Be in his/her assigned seat, with class materials ready by the second bell

-          Have a pencil ready to mark music

-          Actively and willingly participate in during class

-          No talking during instruction

-          Do NOT leave your seat without permission

-          Class participation is 50% of your daily grade

Repeated failure to do any of these will result in points being taken off the class participation grade.

Grading Policy

30%    WRITTEN FORMS OF EVALUATION – There are several forms of written evaluation that will be utilized throughout the year to assess student learning in chorus.  Procedures for the following will be explained in more detail during class:

- Weekly Quizzes/Tests -on basic musical terms/ideas/knowledge learned. Tests will be given each Friday. All tests are worth 100pts.

-Chorus Journal Entries/Responses– Journal will be kept in the students’ work folder or saved to Google Docs for the purpose of classroom reflection, self-evaluation, sectional evaluation, and other written musical analysis assignments given in class by the teacher.

20%    Training assignments –

50% Classroom participation- Students will be given a classroom participation grade of 10pts each day. On Friday’s students will receive their weekly participation grade in addition to their weekly test grade.

Music analysis- each student will be assessed on their abilities to identify key components of musical inserts such as key signatures, time signature, accidentals, musical notes, and basic note duration. Students will not be expected to enter the school year with mastery, However, all of Mr. Sullivan’s students are projected to achieve mastery by the end of the year evaluation.

Performance Grades

200%    Performance Grade –Performances are a very important part of the musical learning process. Performing for the public also gives the students a chance to give something back to the community that supports us.  There is normally one evening concert per semester, (Fall/Spring).  Attendance is mandatory for each performance.  Future performance dates will be announced as soon as we are able to do so.

In the future, should a student have to miss an evening concert (in case of a family emergency or serious illness), the grade will only be excused when the parent contacts Mr. Sullivan for confirmation.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EXTRA CREDIT- Extra Credit will be given each Friday. Students will record themselves singing and present it to Mr. Sullivan through google classroom by Thursday. I will approve the solo and it will either be played on the smartboard or performed personally in class after the test on Friday.

Any further funding needed for the cost of opperations will come from community donations and choir fundraiders throughout the year. Thanks in advance for your continued support.
