Homework Tips

Many parents want to help their children with their homework but are unsure how to do so.  Here are a few helpful tips:

  1. Set-up a structured time for homework - find a time that is right for your child, whether it is after school, after a snack, or after dinner.  It should be a time when they are going to do the work and not be distracted.
  2. Set-up a proper location for homework to be completed - this should preferably be at a table and never in front of the television.
  3. Some kids may need a break during homework depending on the amount of homework and the personality of the child.
  4. Parents often ask how much help should they give their children.  Parents should be involved in making sure the kids have a place and time to do homework and that the homework is finished.  Parents can help when needed and offer some assistance but the kids need to work on their own.  Mom or Dad should not do the work for them.  If the homework is too difficult and the child is confused, they need to show where they tried and the parent needs to jot a note to the teacher.  "Overly involved parents make kids think they can't do the work on their own, and that decreases confidence."
  5. If homework time creates issues in the home, parents can set-up incentives.  Reward kids with stickers, tokens, prizes, computer time, or something special.  If the work isn't getting done, stop the rewards.
  6. Computer games and activities can help improve grades.   Flashcards is another strategy to help kids study.
