Instrumental Care and Practicing

Congratulations!  Learning an instrument is an exciting time and a rewarding experience.  Like any new skill, learning an instrument takes patience and perseverance, so here are a few suggestions for parents and students to help to ensure for a positive experience:

  • Choose a place in your home for practicing and for keeping your instrument.

  • Assemble your instrument carefully, and check for the allignment of the keys.

  •  A music stand is very beneficial for practicing.  There are foldable metal music stands available that are very affordable.

  • Practicing more often for short periods is better than a couple of long sessions a week.  Aim to practice 10 minutes a day 3 or 4 times a week.

  • When students are finished practicing, a woodwind player needs to swab out their instrument when they are finished practicing, and put it away in its case carefully.  Be sure to take the reed off your mouth piece, and put the reed in a reed holder.

  • Brass students need to use the water key, and put their instrument and mouth piece away in the case carefully.
