Safety, Attendance, and Discipline Policies:
Come to class prepared daily with a safe and positive attitude. If you are not feeling well and are unable to work in the lab, please let the instructor know and you will not be penalized. Do not attempt to handle or use any tools or materials you are not familiar with. Always ask the instructor before doing so for the first time. Follow ALL rules set forth in the safety contract at all times.
Students who miss class for any reason are required to inquire with the teacher about missed work and when to schedule make-up work outside of normal class hours. Missed work which is not made up in a timely fashion will not be graded.
With the exception of severe or safety-related disciplinary events, the first disciplinary offense will be a verbal warning. The second disciplinary offense will result in a detention. Following the second offense, the office will assign appropriate disciplinary consequences and removal from the course will be considered.
Expectations about behavior, safety, clean-up, and attitude are very high! See classroom expectations below... Do your best!
HVCHS Practical Arts Elective
Behavior Expectations
The following list should be followed at all times, but may be incomplete. Follow school policies and specific teacher instructions as well.
Student backpacks and personal belongings must be stowed out of walkways and off of work benches. (Near the door)
Students must have their ID on them at all times. Students should remove ID’s dangling from their neck or clothing when using tools and machines, but should be able to quickly present it if asked. Students must bring their ID when they leave the room for any reason. Students without an ID must get a temporary ID from the VP’s office.
One student is permitted to leave the room at a time to use the restroom or go to other destinations. Students using the restroom must return in less than 7 minutes from the time they have left. They must have their ID and scan it when they enter the restroom. Students must take the laminated classroom pass with them, and are only permitted to use the nearest restroom or water fountain in the same hallway. Hall pass violations will result in a detention and/or referral. NO PATTERNS OF USE! Restroom breaks and hall passes are based on the need to use the facility or conduct “official business”, not the desire to get up, stretch, take a break or have a change of scenery. Students will not be permitted to use the restroom multiple days in a row without being asked to provide the nurse with a doctor’s note. Abusing the restroom privilege causes disruption and costs the students valuable instructional time and will result in disciplinary action from the VP. Widespread abuse of the privilege will result in classwide restrictions.
No visits to the room from students who are not in the class without prior teacher permission.
No earbuds in the shop, no exceptions!
No cell phone usage in class, unless using it as a calculator or conducting relevant research- with prior approval. After a student has been warned twice, they will be asked to keep their phone in the teacher’s office for the duration of the class period for the remainder of the year.
Never leave a Computer Controlled (CNC) machine unattended while in operation.
No touching, moving or otherwise handling another student’s project. If a project is in your way, see the teacher for assistance.
Follow all posted safety procedures. School administrators reserve the right to remove a student from the class for significant infractions of the rules, and they have absolutely done so in recent years.
No down time! Not at the start of the period, not at the end of the period, and definitely not between projects. The course and projects are scheduled as such that there is always something to be planning or working on during class. This is the trade-off for never having homework. Making poor use of class time may result in an email home or detention and will certainly impact your grade in the class.
Just be cool, relax and have fun! This isn’t one of your academic classes after all. For safety sake, the shop needs to be a calm, drama-free environment.
When in doubt, ask the teacher. You are being scored on your ability to follow instructions, read and create measurements, make good use of the materials, and use the equipment safely and correctly. After making a good-faith effort to find a solution to anything you might not understand on your own, ask the teacher! Don’t ever bulldoze through a task you are not totally comfortable with on your own. Ask for help.
