*Being a Writer*

 

Unit 1:

The Writing Community

 

During this unit, students will begin to see themselves as part of a writing community.  

We will begin discussing the elements of writing taken on by an author, and how to illustrate our stories.

Guided practice and direct instruction will help build confidence in writing ability, and "turn

and talk" will allow for students to become comfortable when sharing aloud in a group environment.

 

Writing Practice Includes:

 

(Week 1) Draw and write stories about what they can do
(Week 2) Draw and write stories about Kindergarten
(Week 3) Draw and write stories about fun things they do with their families
(Week 4) Draw and write stories about what they will do when they get bigger

 

 

Unit 2:

Getting Ideas

 

Writing Practice Includes:

 

(Week 1) Draw and write about places they like to go
(Week 2) Draw and write about colors
(Week 3) Draw and write about shapes
(Week 4) Draw and write about themselves
(Week 5) Draw and write about things they like
(Week 6) Draw and write about things in the classroom
(Week 7) Draw and write about foods
(Week 8) Draw and write about friends
(Week 9) Draw and write about animals
(Week 10) Draw and write about feelings

 

 

 

 

Unit 3:

Telling More

 

(Week 1) Choosing a topic, writing a story, and rereading to add more
(Week 2) Choosing a topic, writing a story, and rereading to add more
(Week 3) Writing a story, exploring how an author tells more, and rereading to add more
(Week 4) Writing a story, exploring how an author tells more, and rereading to add more

 

 

 

Unit 4:

Just the Facts

 

(Week 1) Exploring nonfiction and writing facts about the classroom
(Week 2) Exploring nonfiction, collecting facts through interviews, and writing facts about their partners
(Week 3) Exploring nonfiction, collecting facts through observation, and writing facts about food

 

 

 

Unit 5:

Opinion Writing

 

(Week 1) Exploring opinion writing and stating their own opinion about animals that would and would not make a good pet
(Week 2) Exploring opinion writing and writing about favorite school activities and opinion letters to the teacher

 

 

 

Unit 6:

Explorting Words Through Poetry

 

(Week 1) Exploring, acting out, and visualizing poems; Drawing and writing about visualizations
(Week 2) Exploring descriptive words and applying them to write shared and individual poems about animals
(Week 3) Exploring descriptive words and applying them to write shared and individual poems about food
