Ways to Help Your Child with Reading at Home

 

Set the Atmosphere

• Help your child find a quiet, comfortable place to read
• Have your child see you as a reading model
• Read aloud to your child
• Read with your child
• Discuss the stories you read together   

        *What was the story about?

        * Where did the story take place?

        * What happened in the beginning, middle and end?

        * Was this book fiction or non fiction?  How do you know?

        * What was the author's purpose for writing this book?

        * Describe how the characters felt throughout the story.  

             

 

Most importantly, focus on what your child is doing well and attempting to do. 

Don’t forget to encourage your child and complement him/her.
