AP ENGLISH 11

 COURSE DESCRIPTION: 

The purpose of this course is to provide college-bound high school students the opportunity to engage deeply with college-level literature in preparation for the AP Literature and Composition Exam in May. Students enrolled in this course will be expected to demonstrate independence, initiative, and insightfulness, as they will independently read difficult texts, write analytically, and lead group discussions.  

   

SYLLABUS

 

  UNIT 1:  TRAGIC HERO (September-November)

 

During Unit 1, students will trace read, analyze, and compare works that deal with the tragic hero. They will read the classic Greek tragedy Antigone, Shakespeare's Macbeth, and the modern plays Death of a Salesman and Fences. Students will write several essays analyzing the literary works, as well as the theme for the unit. 

For more direct exam preparation, students will participate in several writing workshops that focus on elements of analytical writing (thesis statement, writing analysis, using apt support, etc.) and will implement different multiple choice strategies.
