In English 9 Honors, we are beginning the school year with a look at how the rituals and ceremonies of coming of age impact various cultures around the world.  We will discuss how the celebration of becoming an adult gives individuals a sense of identity and an understanding of one's place in society.  Some of these rituals, like the Papua New Guinea ritual of scarification, are very different from how we, as Americans, determine at which point we consider ourselves, as well as others, to be an adult.  Freshman year of high school is an integral part of our adolescents' coming of age and can be a difficult transition from middle school.  The students will also be reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls at home.  I hope that we will be able to work through the challenges of this adjustment with the same energy that we celebration our successes in the classroom.  It is going to be an exciting and fast school year.

Over the next week, you will be receiving an e-mail from Google Classroom.  Google Classroom is the website we use to assign work so that the students can have more experience using technology in our 21st century society.  The e-mail is inviting you to receive notifications of the work your child has been completing.  I would appreciate if you would sign up for these notifications, but it is not mandatory.  I would like to thank you for your future support over the next few months.

Good luck Class of 2023!
