We have flexible seating in our classroom.
What is flexible seating?
When you walk into our classroom, you will probably notice that the desks look very different from other classrooms you've been in. There are a variety of seating options available to students during work times. Students will choose their seat for the day based on what works best for them. My goal is for students to identify the seating options that best help them learn and be productive. Over the first few weeks of school students will be learning how to use the different seating options and will spend time sitting at each choice to determine what works best for them.
The choices include desks with regular chairs, yoga balls, and wobble stools. These options are considered “home base” for the students and will be their primary seat for the day. There are also many other types of seating available for students to use during different activities throughout the day, such as benches, cushion chairs, lap desks, scoop chairs, pillows, throw rugs, white boards, and clipboards.
There is a large rug in the classroom where we meet together for whole group lessons. However, most of our time will be spent in small group instruction. I have a table in the back of the classroom for small group instruction or I will join groups of students on the rug. While I meet with small groups to work on instruction targeted to meet their specific needs, the rest of the students will work independently around the room on a variety of interactive activities to strengthen their skills in reading, writing, and math. During this time the students are able to use the other types of seating available (benches, cushion chairs, etc.)
I believe that flexible seating allows students the opportunity to foster independence and responsibility. Please let me know if you have any questions. I am excited for an amazing year together!
