Ways To Help Your Child Become
a "Super Reader".
Your child’s ability to read, paves the way to success in school. Learning to read does not happen all at once, but you can help your child along the way. Reading aloud is one of the best ways to help your child become interested in reading. Before long your child will grow to love stories and books and eventually, will want to read on his/her own.
- A picture is worth a thousand words; talk about the illustrations and ask questions relating to the pictures.
- Read with expression and have your child act out the story.
- Share different kinds of books (fact, poetry, rhyming, etc.)
- Read favorite books again and again.
- Apply letter and sound knowledge.
- Point out sight words. (Each time you come to a sight word, have your child read it.)
- Ask your child to make predictions throughout the book.
- Retell the story with sequence and story elements (characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end)
- Ask questions such as "What's your favorite page? What do you think will happen next?"
