Major Munro volunteered for the Draft in 1970 and retired from the U.S. Army in 2000. JROTC Instructor from 2000 to present. Throughout his military career, Major Munro has not only been an outstanding soldier, he has also worked tirelessly with the community to increase awareness of social problems and to address emerging issues, particularly to those in inner city and African American communities. His dedication to coach and mentor inner city youths is truly commendable. He not only influenced the lives of young adults, but also significantly contributed to their communities and the military services. A sample of the types of community initiative Major (Ret) Munro has undertaken includes:
- Provided volunteer services to the City of NYC Child Welfare Administration. – Career and Education opportunities and skill program which enabled youth between the ages of 14-21 to make better decisions for and about themselves while they prepare for independence and independent living.
- Provided mentorship for the New York National Guard Challenge Program. – Role model for graduates and provided continuous support after graduation.
- Provided Volunteer Support to SISDA (Simpson Street Development Association, Inc.) BronxNY – Inspired students to achieve realistic goals in life and to exhibit a more positive outlook on life and career goals.
- Recognized for providing the initial input into the Development of the Educational Incentive Bill for the New York National Guard which resulted in the following: The significant increase the Army National Guard experienced in new enlistments, as a result of program implementation, continues," the Governor said. New York National Guard military recruiting and personnel strength management figures remain at top levels amongst the 54 National Guards in the states and four territories. "This is a remarkable achievement considering that a few short years ago New York had the worst Army National Guard recruiting record in the nation," the Governor said. A total of 22 percent of all enrollees are from minority (Afro-American, Hispanic, Asian and Pacific Islander) households, according to Maj. Gen. Jack Fenimore, The Adjutant General of New York, a higher percentage than actual minority membership in the National Guard. "It is clear that the original intents of the bill, to provide ready access to enlisted members, while bolstering personnel strength and enhancing National Guard training and readiness, have exceeded expectations, and the trend continues upward," General Fenimore said.
Major Munro has earned several distinguished Awards from the U.S. Army, NJARNG, NYARNG, PAARNG, National Guard Bureau, Barnes & Noble and U.S. Congress for distinguished service.
