February: Paragraph writing is the topic presently being taught. Paragraph structure, organization, and mechanics are being reinforced.  Students "visualize" paragraphs by color-coding the parts.  In addition, transition words/phrases are being used to connect ideas.  Dear Mr. Henshaw is the novel we are presently reading.  We are incorporating our various reading strategies as we discuss the novel.

November: We will be reviewing literary devices that we know and working on new devices.  After, we will begin our first novel.

September:  We have started working on various types of genres (fiction and non-fiction).  We will then be learning about different reading strategies and applying the when reading different genres.  Media center orientation is 9/24 and 9/25-- students may bring in a device to download the Destiny App.

Welcome back!  A list of required materials was sent home today.  Please have materials by Tuesday, September 8.  Thank you.

We have doing work on using context clues; in addition, we have been continuing our study of vocabulary words related to various Latin roots.  We have also just started our next novel, Maniac Magee. We will use the "Questioning" strategy often as we read to help increase comprehension.  Here is a link to the entire novel on audio-- by chapter:

We have finished reading Dear Mr. Henshaw  and completed a writing piece on how Leigh, the main character, is a dynamic character in the novel.  Presently we are working on various skills such as context clues, central idea, and vocabulary.  We will read some short stories, and then we will begin our next novel, Maniac Magee.

We have recently started reading our first book titled Dear Mr. Henshaw by Bevely Cleary. We will work on various reading strategies, develop fluency, and look for text evidence.

Our class will be going to the book fair during language arts on Wednesday, October 22.  If your child would like to purchase books and/or snacks, please send in money on the day.

We have gone over literary devices, and students will be quizzed on the terms.  In addition, we will do some hands-on work in our Interactive Notebooks to reinforce the terms.

Currently, we are working on learning about various types of genres.  We will then continue on to literary devices and short stories.
