Frequently asked questions about the Acclerated Reader Program

What Level AR book is my child reading?

The ZPD or Zone of Proximal Development shows students what level books they may check out. Students are to stay within this book range. Students start at the lowest end of the ZPD and move towards the higher end of the zone throughout the quarter.

Here is an example of a ZPD 4.5-5.8 A student working in this range will start at 4.5 books and work towards 5.8 books by the end of the quarter.

The first number indicates the grade level, the second number is the month of the school year. For example, 4.5 stands for fourth grade, fifth month of fourth grade.

The ZPD can be found in the student AR folder.

How is the ZPD determined?
At the beginning of each quarter students take a STAR test which is part of the AR program. The test consists of students reading sentences with missing words. Based on accuracy of the students choices the computer assigns the ZPD.

What is the AR log for?
Students have a log to record test information. On the log sheet students record the books, number of pages in the book, AR level, percentage correct on the quiz, and points earned. As students complete their log, they can track their average AR level and points earned.

What types of books will my child read this year?

Students will be reading from many different types of genres. Biographies, fiction, nonfiction, poetry, historical fiction as well as chapter books will be enjoyed this year. Students can check out a "Fun Book" that is not on his or her color. These books can be checked out and read for pleasure!

What is a point goal?
Each AR book is worth a set amount of points. The point value for the AR book can be located on the AR sticker on the outside of the book. Points are given to students for every test they take. The higher the test score the more points they can earn.

How is the point goal determined for the quarter?

The point goal is based on the ZPD (see above) the students are currently working in.

Reasons why students are not reaching their point goal

Student test scores are low.

Students are not reading for 30 minutes nightly. Less books read equates to less tests taken.

How long do students have to reach their point goal for the quarter?
Students have about 45 days, one quarter, to reach their point goal.

What do the color stickers mean?
The AR Program provides a color system to help children find their reading ranges quickly.

Is AR for homework?
Yes. Students are to read for 30-45 minutes each night.
