Meet The Teacher! 

 


 

   First grade is a very important year for your student. I have comprised a list of what your child will learn this year, but please remember what is mentioned on this list is not all we learn but rather a generalized overview of what students typically learn in first grade. Please make sure to practice with your child reading, writing, and math skills so they do not forget what they have learned in kindergarten! 

During Morning Work:

*      Students are reviewing the skills and concepts previously learned to gain independent mastery and keeping the information fresh in your child’s mind.

 

During Morning Meeting:

*      Students are reviewing how to read and write the date including the days of the week and months of the year.

*     Students are learning and reviewing different patterns, money, place value, number sense, greater than/less than, addition, subtraction, editing, punctuation, spelling, among other concepts.

 

During Language Arts work and Language Arts centers:

*     Students are learning different concepts and skills such as, but not limited to: spelling, phonics, comprehension, and writing.

*      Students are independently and cooperatively learning by rotating through various centers where they will complete literacy based activities that reinforce concepts and skills they have learned.

 

During Guided Reading:

*      Students are learning and practicing different skills to strengthen their reading to build fluency as well as comprehension.

 

During Writer's Workshop/Journal Writing:

*      Students are learning and practicing the different steps of the writing process (brainstorm, rough draft, editing, publishing/final copy).

*     Students are practicing writing through which they learn and reinforce spelling, handwriting, phonics, etc.

 

During Math and Math Centers:

*     Students are learning about differnt concepts, such as but not limited to: addition, subtraction, geometric shapes, skip counting, one-to-one correspondence, money, time, patterns, and word problems.

*      Students are independently and cooperatively learning by rotating through various centers where they will complete math based activities that reinforce concepts and skills they have learned.

 

When your child is learning Social Studies/Science they are:

*      Students are learning about the world around them such as: different cultures, how to investigate, their neighborhood, etc.

*   Students are  incorporating other skills such as writing and mathematics.

 

 

Reminders:

Please remember that the school day begins promptly at 8:40, please make sure your child is on time every day as we begin learning right away! Additionally, dismissal is at 2:45.

 

Homework will usually be assigned Monday - Thursday, please check your child's folder for their homework and sign the homework once they have completed it. All homework should be on the left side of their folder, while papers on the right side of the folder are to keep at home.

 

If you are sending money to school for any reason I ask that you place it in an envelope in their folder. On the envelope please include the following: your child's first and last name, my name (Mrs. Ryan), our room number (106), and the reason for the money.

 

The weekly spelling words can be found under the link on the left hand side titled: Weekly Spelling Words. Please practice these words every night with your child! Spelling and Reading tests are usually held every Friday.
