Fun Fall Activities
There is a slight chill in, which is perfect weather for outside physical activities. By moving our bodies, we can help develop many foundational motor and perceptual skills as well as learn a multitude of cognitive concepts. Check out some ideas on how to start off the school year!
Life Skills:
-
Practice zippering and unzippering lighter jackets, which are much easier than the bulky winter wear.
-
Time to practice shoe tying again! All those months in sandals can get a brain a little rusty on this much needed school skill. Check out my website directions if you need a refresher!
-
Raking leaves is a fabulous way to strength core muscles, develop upper body and hand strength. It is also a wonderful bilateral coordination activity. Rake away and improve your ability to sit upright at the table and improve fine motor control all while doing chores. Don't forget to make a pile to jump in first to keep it fun!
Fine Motor Skills:
-
Put leaves under tissue paper, push down hard and rub with a crayon to make a collage.
-
Practice opening and closing small containers and zip lock bags (which you can fill with small snacks or toys). This will not only help develop fine motor skills but also help them be independent at snack time
Handwriting:
- Beginner writers can practice letters by writing letters in shaving cream that they spread on a tray or on the wall in the shower
- More advanced writers can sit outside and make a list of words to describe what they hear, smell, feel, see and taste now that the seasons are changing (i.e. hear crunchy leaves, smell damp grass, feel bumpy pumpkins, see colors like orange/red/brown, taste sweet apples)
