Summer Activity Suggestions

It is summer time, lets have some fun!

Life Skills Activities:

  • Going on an overnight, weekend or week long vacation?  Help your child develop their ability to sequence, follow a check list of items they need to pack, fold clothes in half or quarters (which they need to do with school papers also) all while developing important independent skills.
  • Have your child pack for a picnic (even if it is a blanket set up in the back yard).  They can make their own sandwiches, select a drink and prepare a simple fruit salad or dessert.  Again, they will be working on gathering needed items (same as they do in school when they have to get a pencil, paper, glue and scissors for a task), sequencing the steps to make the sandwich or salad/dessert all while preparing themselves for packing their own lunch in September.

Fine Motor Activities:

  • Blow bubbles outside and have your child pop them with small tongs, which is a great way to work on integrating the visual and motor systems.
  • Play relay games with water. Have your child tranfer water from one container to another with a cup (with or without holes, depending on how challenging you want to make it), sponge or a large spoon.

Handwriting Activities:

  • Side walk chalk can provide hours of entertainment. Decorate the sidewalk or driveway for a holiday such as last day of school, a birthday, 4th of July or just to draw their best picture.
  • Have your child practice letters/name/words in the sand (at the beach, sand box, or sand you put in a tray).  They can also send a postcard from someplace local to a relative who lives far away or you can write postcards that you buy when on vacation (even if you send them after you come home).
