Students are required to complete a Do Now at the beginning of class each day. The Do Now takes place about 3-7 minutes at the beginning of class and is a grade. Students who are late to class miss out on completing the Do Now and thus miss out on a passing grade. Please arrive to class on time and failure to have a late pass will result in a 0 for the Do Now.
I use a variety of different Do Now activities in my class, which allows us to practice different skills throughout the week.
Do Nows include:
- Grammar Refreshers- Students edit and make corrections to provided writing samples, text messages, or tweets. After checking for student completion through participation, we review the corrections together.
- Journal Prompts-Students are provided a topic or questions, and they write a response in their notebooks. Journal prompts are linked to the lesson we will be completing in class that day.
- Video Journal Prompts- Students watch a brief video clip and then write a response to the video.
- What Would You Do- Provides students with ethical dilemas or questions in which they have to discuss within their groups. Members of the groups then present the key points and insights from their discussion.
- Words of the Day- Students will copy down the definitions of new vocabulary words in their notebooks. Then students need to create their own sentences and visual representation of the word.
