Counting and Number Use

Sorting

 

Activities through play in the classroom:

*locating and naming numbers on the cash register

*writing numbers on pretend money and counting

the correct number of dollars to pay the cashier

*counting the total amount of items purchased

*sorting food items by category on the shelves of the supermarket (for example: all pasta on one shelf; all drinks on a different shelf)

 

 

Whole and Small Group Activities:

*sorting shapes by color and size

*counting to determine a quantity when playing

"Making Collections"

 
At home:

*have your child help put food items away by

category; for example: ask your child to get all the yogurt from the bag

*have your child locate numbers around the house: on the digital clocks; TV remotes; computer keyboard; phones

*count with your child... count anything: cookies; snacks; toys; crayons; coins... be sure your child touches each one as he/she counts
