Helpful Ways to Help Your Child
Reading & Math
Here’s some helpful hints when working with your child/children this year:
Reading:
1-Your child should be reading for 20 minutes every night. They should not stop or be distracted. This should be done in a quiet spot with no distractions. As the year goes by we will raise the amount of time your child should be reading. His/Her goal by the end of the year will be 30 minutes.
2-They can read silently or out loud to themselves, a sibling, or an adult.
3- It should be a book they are interested in. Go to the library and check out books or if you’re at a store maybe purchase a book to practice reading. This helps build fluency. Find a friend in the neighborhood and maybe the children can switch books weekly.
4-Questions you can ask your child:
Fiction Stories (traditional literature, fantasy, realistic, etc)
- Who are the main characters in the book?
- Where does the story take place?
- What is the problem of story? How did the character(s) solve the problem?
Non-Fiction Stories (informational text, biographies, newspaper articles, etc)
- What is the main idea of the book?
- Give me two details to support the main idea.
- Why did the author write this story? to entertain; to persuade; to inform
5-Remember this should be a fun time, not a fight.
Math:
Students should be studying their basic math facts along with multiplication and division facts every night. We will supply the students with one pack of flash cards, if your child loses them you will need to purchase a replacement from the store. If you can’t find flash cards then use playing cards. They need to memorize their facts. We will stress the importance of memorizing their facts.
