Reading: Setting Up Daily 5 and First Grade Review is the first unit. This unit builds excitement around a new year and gets the Daily 5 reading workshop up and running with an introduction to the procedures for participating in a new classroom reading community. Second graders learn to take charge of their own reading and build good habits. They follow the routines, procedures, and expectations for the Daily 5 reading workshop. They review and apply what they already know about reading and seek out “just right” books. Students also practice reading with stamina, engagement, and fluency.
Writing: In "The Writing Community," students see themselves as contributing members of a writing community. They hear and discuss examples of good writing and learn about the writing practices of professional authors. They generate writing ideas by drawing, listing ideas, and writing sentences. The students write about their lives. They approximate the spelling of unfamiliar words, use ending sentence punctuation and capitalize proper nouns and the first letters of sentences. The students also learn the cooperatives structures "Turn to Your Partner" and "Think, Pair, Share." They share in pairs and with the class, applying taught speaking and listening skills.
Grammar : What Do I Know From First Grade?
This unit is designed to review the aspects of grammar that was previously taught in Grade 1. The unit will be on-going throughout the year. Students will have the opportunity to review previously taught skills. In reviewing the core concepts from prior years, students will be ready to connect new ideas to their prior learning. This unit reviews fundamental applications of capitalization, parts of speech, punctuation and sentence composition.
Phonics Unit: Week 1 review: In this unit, students will review the words containing all first grade content including consonants, blends, digraphs protectors, short vowels, vowel teams and open and closed syllables. They will review suffixes such as -s, es, -ing & -ed and discuss how they change the meaning of a word. They will review first grade Heart Words for automaticity and to prepare students to learn new words using the Heart Word approach.
