         Reading:   In the "Literature: Plot, Setting & Character unit," focus lessons will highlight the different components of a story, including character, setting, and plot. Students will dig deeper by studying characters before, during, and after reading. They will use strategies for getting to know their characters. Students will be able to conduct an inquiry on how characters change and grow throughout the story. Students will learn how identifying the setting and plot can help the reader to better understand the story.
   Writing:  In "The Writing Community," students see themselves as contributing members of a writing community. They hear and discuss examples of good writing and learn about the writing practices of professional authors. They generate writing ideas by drawing, listing ideas, and writing sentences. The students write about their lives. They approximate the spelling of unfamiliar words, use ending sentence punctuation and capitalize proper nouns and the first letters of sentences. The students also learn the cooperatives structures "Turn to Your Partner" and "Think, Pair, Share." They share in pairs and with the class, applying taught speaking and listening skills.

Grammar : What Do I Know From First Grade?
This unit is designed to review the aspects of grammar that was previously taught in Grade 1. The unit will be on-going throughout the year. Students will have the opportunity to review previously taught skills. In reviewing the core concepts from prior years, students will be ready to connect new ideas to their prior learning. This unit reviews fundamental applications of capitalization, parts of speech, punctuation and sentence composition.

  Math:  In topic 3, your child is learning to add within 100 using various strategies. In this topic, he or she will learn to add two-digit numbers using place-value strategies on a hundred chart.

  Science:  "Materials and Uses" is our first unit.  In this unit of study, students will demonstrate an understanding of observable properties of materials through analysis and classification of different materials.
