Reading: In the "Nonfiction Text Features" unit, students will discover how informational text works and how it requires one to set a different purpose for reading. Students will not only learn to identify informational text features and structures for nonfiction books, but they will learn how to use these features to support their comprehension. Students will ask questions to learn about new facts. This unit also helps students to figure out unknown words and read nonfiction with fluency and intonation.
Writing: In the "Telling More" unit, students write longer pieces as they explore telling more. They think before writing about things they might tell, and they also reread their stories to determine what else they might say. They add details and tell more about characters. The students learn to confer with partners by giving and receiving feedback about their stories. They also share their partners' thinking with the class and express interest in and appreciation for one another's writing.
Grammar - What Do Capital Letters Do?
Students will learn that capital letters are appropriate to use for different and specific purposes beyond to begin a sentence and to capitalize the first letter of a name. In this unit, students will learn the process of capitalization of holidays, product names, and geographic names, as well as how to capitalize appropriate words in titles.
What Do Adjectives Do?
Students will learn what adjectives are and how adjectives work in a sentence or text.

Math: In topic 5, your child is learning to subtract within 100 using various strategies. These include breaking apart numbers, using compensation, using a hundred chart, and using an open number line. In this topic, your child will also analyze information to model and solve one- and two-step word problems.

Social Studies: Our New Jersey unit is an exploration into the concepts of time, continuity, and change designed to build students’ understandings of the passage of time and explain why the past matters today. Students will initially learn about New Jersey's history and geography. They will use this knowledge to explore the competing perspectives of the colonists and the native Lenni Lenape people. Students will gain an understanding of colonial life as it led up to the American Revolution.
