Writing: In the "Opinion" unit, students read and discuss examples of opinion writing. They write several opinion pieces, including a persuasive letter to a parent or guardian that states and supports an opinion. They brainstorm topics about which they have strong opinions and select topics to write about. They explore identifying an audience and purpose for their writing, clearly stating an opinion, supporting that opinion with reasons, using linking words to connect reasons to opinions and writing effective opening and closing sentences that state their opinions. They confer in pairs and revise their writing based on partner feedback. Socially, they express their own opinions, and use discussion prompts to help them agree and respectfully disagree with the opinions of others. They continue to express interest in and appreciation for one another's writing.
