Extended Constructed Response questions (ECRs)

What is an ECR?

In short, it’s an essay question. Essay questions are a more complex version of a simple question and answer.

There are 4 parts to answering an essay question of this sort.  We call the format for answering these “RACE.”

=========================================================================================    R:  Restate the question - first, state the title of the story, article, text, etc…  then, turn the      question into a statement.

A:  Answer the question - make sure to answer all parts of the question. If there are two              questions, you should answer each question in its own paragraph.

C:  Cite evidence from the text. - You MUST quote the text and prove your answer to be true.      Use evidence based terms to begin your sentences.

E:  Explain and extend - Explain how this evidence supports your answer. Give examples from        connections you made.

I know this because in paragraph _____, it says,

  • Explain how your evidence from the text supports your answer. You can use your own background knowledge and connections you made from your own experience.
