Open-Ending Response Acronym

(Grade 5 & Middle School)

R - Restate the Question

You can simply restate the question as your first sentence - or- you can develop a topic sentence based on what is being asked.

A - Answer All Parts

As you are responding, make sure you are responding to each part of the question or all questions.  If you leave part of the question out, you will not have a complete response.

C - Cite Evidence

Be sure to include paraphrases or quotations from the passage to help support your response.  Make sure to include the title of the selection and the author’s name when citing evidence. Don’t forget quotation marks if using a direct quote!

E - Explain Evidence

When including a paraphrase or quote, you need to explainhow it supports what you are trying to say.  If you just put the quote or paraphrase with no information to explain how it helps to support your answer, the reader will not understand its importance.

R - Re-read

It is time to take a step back and look at what you wrote.  Proofread it to check for errors in punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and meaning.  Did you fully answer the question(s)? Does your evidence support your response? Does it flow?

S - Sum it All Up

You have taken the time to proofread and go over everything you wrote.  Now find a way to close it up. Your closing sentence helps to show the reader that you have completed your response and finds a way to connect your entire response back to your original thought.  (Do not re-write your opening sentence!)
