Course Description:

            Our course will focus upon developing an understanding of world geography and the many cultures of both past and present day.  We will begin the year identifying the tools and skills geographers, archaeologists, historians, and other scholars use to explore and learn about the past.  From there we will examine the beginnings of human society.  During this time you will gain an understanding of hunters and gatherers, the Agricultural Revolution, and the development of the first significant communities.  Next, we will look at the emergence of early river valley civilizations.  You will discover the characteristics and accomplishments of Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus River Valley, and the Yellow River Valley civilization.  Following the study of these early civilizations comes an exploration of the classical civilizations of the Mediterranean World. You will learn about Greece and Rome, and how they developed and expanded into empires that made lasting contributions.    

            As we explore the various cultures of the world we will continuously be integrating geography into our lessons.  By the end of the year you will have a strong understanding on how world cultures and geography have shaped the world we live in today.

            During your studies you will be able to acquire a working knowledge of various history concepts such as cause and effect, sequence of events, recognizing interconnections, and thinking critically and creatively.  You will also develop essential skills in speaking and writing, doing research with primary and secondary resources, as well as using maps, graphs, charts, and tables to interpret and present data.

            Throughout the year you will continually reinforce your learning and apply your knowledge with the intent of not only doing well academically, but also in gaining a greater appreciation for social studies.  By analyzing how certain events have shaped the character of people you will be able to learn more about yourself.
