Overview:
Art is part of the cycle program at the Middle School. Students take Art for approximately 7 weeks. In the Art cycle, students will complete at least 3-4 larger projects, as well as a sketchbook, each based on specific Principles and Elements of Design. Projects are designed to build skills through use of a variety of media and explore the historical, creative, and aesthetic components of art.
Assessment:
Teachers will use a point based system to evaluate projects. Grades are broken down according to the following criteria:
- Emphasis on effort and positive active participation.
- How well students meet the learning objectives relative to each particular project (demonstrating Principles and Elements of Design involved).
- Overall craftsmanship and creativity relative to the particular medium being used.
Curriculum:
Projects are based on use of a variety of media with an emphasis on the Principles and Elements of Design. The Principles of Design include Emphasis, Variety, Contrast, Pattern, Repetition, Unity, Balance, and Rhythm. Media used may include some or all of the following: ceramics, painting, drawing, printmaking, and collage. Our goal is to give students access to a variety of media and experiences.
