Objective: Brainstorm ideas for Common App essays

Method: Read the directions and the essay prompts on this worksheet. Select FOUR essays over the next week, and brainstorm lists of personal experiences you could use to write these essays next year.

How you will be graded: At the end of the week, send me your lists.

 

 

Tuesday June 2

 

 

 

Objective: self-reflect about post-high school plans

Method: Take this Google form survey, then look at the responses of your classmates. 

How you will be graded: completion

 

Wednesday - Friday (June 3-5)

 

Objective: Explore college options by searching campuses by size, setting, major, etc.

Method: Directions for the assignment and links to virtual tours are here. After completing three tours, complete this form.

How you will be graded: This is a three day assignment. Tour one college a day and submit Friday through Google Forms.

 

Unit Plan for "Winter Dreams" by F. Scott Fitzgerald

 

Day 1 (Friday May 15)

Objective: Explore the life of author F. Scott Fitzgerald in order to understand his works.

Method: Go to Edpuzzle.com and log on. You should already have a user name and password from the last time. If you did not sign up last time, do so today using the following class codes:
Blue - uzmezno
Yellow - umefapd
Red - kefjomf

You will have a short biography to watch about American author F. Scott Fitzgerald, along with several multiple choice questions. The questions are very easy, so your grade will be based on performance only.

How you will be graded: This is a hw/classwork grade for fourth MP. I will get the score directly from EdPuzzle. If you complete this more than a week late, please contact me when you are complete, so I do not have to check the site daily for updates.

 



Day 2 (Monday May 18)

Objective: Review the concept of the American Dream and write a reflective/argumentative paragraph about the accessibility of that dream.

Method: Watch ">my slide presentation about F. Scott Fitzgerald, The American Dream, and the short story "Winter Dreams." After watching, respond to the question: Do you believe everyone can achieve the American Dream? Make sure to include your own personal dream (goals in life) in your response. Do not just start off - "No, bc...." or "Yes..." Answer in full sentences: The American Dream can be achieved by anyone who..... or The American Dream is unattainable to all Americans because....

How you will be graded: This should be at least five sentences. You will lose 20 points for each missing sentence. Use complete sentences - stay away from fragments, as they won't be counted as a full sentence. Upload to Google Classroom (if you are on it) or email me the document or picture. 

Day 3 (Tuesday May 19)

Objective:  Create sentences with new vocabulary words; read and analyze Part I of "Winter Dreams"

Method: Complete this vocabulary worksheet for "Winter Dreams." After the worksheet, read Part I of "Winter Dreams" and respond to these questions. Note: Winter Dreams is on Page 744 in your textbook, or you can use this copy of the story, if your book is not at home with you.

How you will be graded: Worksheet is graded on accuracy, so don't just guess on the multiple choice. Pay attention to the part of speech when writing sentences so you don't use an adjective as a noun, etc. The questions are also graded on attempted accuracy. Upload responses to Google classroom (if you are on there) If not, email to me.

Day 4 (Wednesday May 20)

Objective: Read and analyze Parts II and III of "Winter Dreams"

Method: Read next two parts and answer these questions

How you will be graded: This is a classwork grade. Upload to Google classroom or email to me. 

Day 5 (Thursday May 21)

Objective: Read and analyze Parts IV and V of "Winter Dreams"

Method: Finish reading the short story and answer these questions. 

How you will be graded: This is a classwork grade. Upload to Google classroom or email to me.

Day 6 (Friday May 22)

This is a catch-up day. Those of you that are caught up, enjoy a four-day weekend break from English work. Those of you who are behind, make sure you catch up. I won't be accepting late work forever!!

Day 7 (Tuesday May 26)

Objective: Apply grammar skills: subject-verb agreement and dashes.

Method: Complete this worksheet on subject-verb agreement and this Google form worksheet on dashes.

How you will be graded: The subject-verb agreement worksheet is a classwork grade. It is based partially on accuracy, as all passing grades will receive a 100 and all non-passing grades will receive a 70. The dash worksheet is worth a half quiz grade - due to the writing portion. It is scored out of 10. One point for each correct multiple choice response and five points for the writing portion.

Day 8 (Wednesday May 27)

Objective: Compare and contrast Dexter's drive for material success with his desire for Judy Jones. 

Method: You will be filling out a graphic organizer as if you were writing an essay on the topic. Using this graphic organizer as a model, select quotes and details about Dexter's desires. You need at least three differences and two similarities on the chart. 

How you will be graded: This is a half a quiz grade - 100: Three differences in each column. Two alikes. At least five quotes used in the evidence. 90: Three differences in each column. Two alikes. At least four quotations used in the evidence. 80: Three differences in each column. Two alikes. At least three quotations used in the evidence. Etc. 

Day 9 (Thursday May28)

Objective: Draw inferences about the story and characters based on the text; review a short story for assessment.

Method: Complete this worksheet on drawing inferences in the story "Winter Dreams." Then study for a quiz tomorrow Make sure that all of your work on this unit is caught up BEFORE you take the quiz. On the last two quizzes, students were taking the quiz without doing the reading and the scores showed that!

How you will be graded: Upload answers to Google classroom or email them to me. This is a classwork grade. Each questions is worth 20 points. 

Day 10 (Friday May 29) ASSESSMENT DAY

Objective: Demonstrate comprehension on an assessment of the short story "Winter Dreams," This includes knowledge of vocabulary, characterization, grammar, and theme.

Method: Here is the quiz

How you will be graded: This is a quiz grade for the 4th marking period.

Day 11 (Monday June 1)

This is a catch up day. If you are on time with all of your assignments, enjoy the long weekend. If you are behind, you need to get caught up. I will not accept any past due work after this Wednesday at 3 p.m. Our last, and final, unit begins tomorrow. It is an exploratory unit for college and careers. No text book required.
