Social Emotional Learning Explained
Social Emotional Learning is how a student learns the social and self-regulatory skills needed for maturing and growing. It includes topics like managing stress, understanding their own feelings, social relationships, appropriate social skills, and decision-making skills. In my classroom, we focus on these skills throughout the entire school year. Your students will learn skills to help them better manage their frustrations, make lasting social relationships, understand how friendships work, make decisions that are the best for them, and manage their own reactions to changes in their environment.
We will be following the CASEL framework for Social Emotional Learning that breaks things down into 5 categories:
1. Self-Awareness
2. Self-Management
3. Social Awareness
4. Relationship Skills
5. Responsible Decision-Making
Students will work through each category over the course of the school year. The goal of a Social Emotional Learning framework is to help students better manage their own emotions, feelings, and behavior by teaching them communication skills, self-awareness and spatial awareness skills, and social-relationship skills.
