2018-2019 English III Syllabus

Course Materials

  • One binder (used for English class only)
  • pocket folder with prongs
  • large pack of sheet protectors
  • College-Ruled Loose-leaf paper (buy plenty - no wide ruled, please)
  • binder dividers
  • dark blue or black ink pens
  • a light colored highlighter marker
  • 3 manila folders (do not write on them - not even your name!) we have stickers made
  • A set of rainbow colored pens
  • Several packs of lined 3 by 5 index cards
  • Several packs of 3 by 3 post it notes
  • A stapler and staples
  • $5.00 per semester materials fee

 

Objectives:  Major course objectives include

  • preparing students for the ACT and other standardized tests
  • increasing proficiency in standard English grammar, the writing process, and reading comprehension skills
  • developing basic research skills
  • utilizing technology to acquire and communicate knowledge
  • developing appreciation for the various cultures in America
  • tracing the development of the American character and the American Dream as they evolve over the decades of American history

 

Classroom Expectations

  • Do not be tardy to class for any reason
  • Bring all necessary materials to class daily (textbook, binder, pens, etc.)
  • Enter the room quietly, sit in your assigned seat, and start working on the bell-ringer activity
  • Do not speak or make noises while the instructor is talking or quiet activities are taking place
  • Raise your hand to participate and wait to be acknowledged
  • Wait to be dismissed by the instructor, not the bell

 

Methods of evaluation: Students’ progress will be evaluated using a variety of tools: formal assessment (objective and essay tests), informal assessment (homework, classwork, class participation, teacher observation, etc.), projects, portfolios, and formal and informal essays.  Formal research papers will be used each semester. The St. Landry Parish Grading Scale will be used. Rubrics will be used for writing assignments. You will have a midterm and a final exam which will come from the notes and lectures done during the year. Keep notes!

Policies and Procedures

 

  • Students must follow the OHS policies for attendance, dress code, and attendance.
  • Assignments missed due to absence:
    • The reason for your absence does not affect the makeup policy below. (illness, suspension, athletics, field trip, etc)
    • If assigned before your absence it is due the day you return
    • If assigned during your absence you will have up to three days, depending on the item missed’s complexity
    • Sleeping in class will not be tolerated.
    • Using cell phones is prohibited – this includes taking them out in class.
    • Plagiarism (copying someone else’s ideas and using them as your own) will result in a zero. No exceptions. Cite your sources in MLA.
    • This is a Google classroom. You need access to technology to use it. This software even has phone apps to use to type your papers!
    • Students and parents/guardians will use JCampus to access grades. Do not ask for this in person. You can get your JCampus login letter in the front office from the secretary if you have forgotten your login information.
    • Other policies and procedures will be discussed in class and posted in your Google Classroom for you to acknowledge as we go on in the year
