Ms. Cantrell’s Classroom Procedures

Arrival Time: Students are not to be dropped off at school any earlier than 7:20 am.  Any students that are eating breakfast that are car riders in the morning will go directly to the lunchroom to eat breakfast and then to the classroom.  Students who are bus riders in the mornings will report directly to the classroom and then go to the lunchroom for breakfast. All other students not going to breakfast will begin morning work. Upon returning from breakfast, all students will complete morning work.

Take Home Folder: Your child will bring home a 2 pocket folder everyday. One pocket will say “bring back” and one will say “keep at home.” Please check and clean this out everyday! NO BINDERS, please! Everyone is to use the same provided folder.

Agendas: Your child will be bringing home an agenda everyday. The student will be responsible for writing down their homework in this agenda and behavior comments from the teacher will also be written in this agenda. PLEASE INITIAL THE AGENDA EVERYDAY SAYING YOU SAW THE HOMEWORK AND BEHAVIOR COMMENTS. If homework is not completed, the student will complete the assignments during recess.

Reading Log: This is the most important paper in your child’s folder. Please read to your child, have your child read to you or have your child read independent EVERY night. After doing so, have students fill out their reading log and the student and parent must sign this.  Every second week the students will turn in their reading log with the book report on the back completed. The book report is for a grade.

Reading passages may replace reading logs some weeks. The same policy will apply though.

Homework Policy: I do give homework and it is vital that your child complete this nightly. Not only should your child complete this, but quality work is stressed. If work does not meet standards, it will be redone during recess or for homework the following night. If a note is on the work to be redone, please do so and return the following day.

Homework will typically consist of a possible spelling/stem contract, a math word problem/ computation sheet and a 30 min reading log.

Homework may be done in advance, but will not be checked in advance and must still meet standard and be of quality.

PLEASE CHECK OVER HOMEWORK WITH YOUR CHILD NIGHTLY.

***Data indicates that for about every 30 minutes of “additional” homework a student does per night, his or her overall grade point average (GPA) increases about half a point.  This means that if a student with a GPA of 2.00 increases the amount of homework they do by 30 minutes per night, their GPA will rise to 2.50 (Keith, T.Z., 1982).

Newsletter: A newsletter will be sent home every week, or emailed out, and it will contain the curriculum, important dates, and the specials schedule.

Transportation: I MUST ALWAYS HAVE A NOTE FOR A CHANGE IN TRANSPORTATION! Please, no emails!

Assessments: Reading Assessments each week, or biweekly, will include a vocabulary assessment, a comprehension assessment for the story being read and a cold read passage (passage not previously read to assess reading skill being taught). Stem assessments will be used to assess the meaning and understanding of the word by writing sentences. Math assessment will be per unit, including word problems and computation. ALL VOCABULARY SHOULD COME HOME TO STUDY, but can be found on my website as well.

In Class Assignments: Most work will be done in class, but work that is not finished may be sent home for homework.

Snack: There will be a snack time each day. Please no candy or drinks (only water).

Contacting the teacher: Email is the best form of communication for me, as that I do not have access to a phone during the day. Notes work well too. Please note that I cannot accept transportation changes through email. Phone: 770-443-8777

Email: [email protected]  and, or go to Nebo’s website, staff, Michelle Cantrell and then click on Oncourse to reach my website.
