WRITING ASSIGNMENT # 1

 

Directions:

 

  • Choose one of The New York Times articles posted below; follow the link; read the article; take detailed notes as part of the outlining process.
  • Write a 5-paragraph essay summarizing the article's subject, the reporter's point of view, and your impressions and own position(s). What is the article about? Give details. What position does the writer take on the subject? What are the stated issues? Do you side with the author - why or why not? What is your reaction to, and personal opinion about, the subject?
  • Create 5 multiple choice questions as part of a test you will be administering to a peer. In addition, create 1 open-ended short constructed response question. 
  • Follow the Writing Process as posted/reviewed in the classroom. Keep all drafts and additional research inside a folder. You must show a detailed outline and any notes you may have taken; 2 written (cursive) drafts with red self-edits and peer-edits; a final (typed TNR/12/DS) draft with cover, heading, image, etc. You must also include, as a last page, a full bibliography (MLA) listing all sources.
  • Due Dates: Folder/Outline/Additional Research: Tuesday, September 9, 2014; Draft # 1 Self-Edited: Wednesday, September 10, 2014; Draft # 2 Peer-Edited: Thursday, September 11, 2014; Published Typed Draft: Monday, September 15, 2014.
